Telemedicine and Telehealth are the newest healthcare delivery innovation spreading across the county. Although these methods of delivery has been in place for years in rural and underserved population areas, it has now reached the mainstream of healthcare delivery for any needs, in any area. This has been particularly true in the past year as the proliferation of Telemedicine has been fast and expansive nationwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In order to be compliant with telemedicine or telehealth delivery, one must have a clear knowledge of the federal laws that affect such practice as well as the state laws in his or her “home state”, and the state laws in any and all states in which he or she plans to deliver telemedicine or telehealth services A practice must also be aware of their third-party payor contract regulations as to how they can, and cannot, get paid for such services. Many of these laws have also been affected by executive orders and federal mandates during the COVID emergency.
Many individuals and practices who want to start offering these services to patients who may travel frequently or vacation or attend school out of state for extended periods are often confused as to where to start. This presentation will walk the attendee through the process one must go through to determine: (i) if telemedicine/telehealth is a viable option for his or her practice, (ii) how to start integrating such offerings, (iii) how to get paid, and (iv) how to expand into new states. We will also discuss the rapid changes that were adopted during the pandemic and what changes we are anticipating are, hopefully, here to stay!
